Max focuses on analyzing data from Svalbard

Our PhD candidate, Max Willems, is currently working through the vast amount of data collected during her seasonal experiments on Svalbard. She measured the oxygen consumption of Polar cod during rest and exercise, specifically looking at how their physiology is affected by different water temperatures: ambient Ny-Ålesund fjord and 3°C warmer.

Max is analyzing hundreds of Excel sheets using scripts made in the programming language R to determine if the gathered data matches what she saw during the experiments: that it’s more difficult for fish to live and swim in warmer water. The process is slow, but steadily underway.
