Beyond the Lab: YESSS PhD Students Dive into the World of Media
Science is about discovery, but it’s also about communication — sharing research findings is crucial for making an impact on the world. To guide our PhD students in the world of science communication, the team in May 2024 participated in a two-day social media workshop at the Alfred-Wegener-Institute (AWI) in Bremerhaven.
Led by Bremen-based photojournalist and cinematographer Alasdair Jardine and the YESSS communication team, the workshop immersed the students in the art of visual storytelling. They explored the technical aspects of photography and videography, including mastering the use of professional cameras, while also delving into the art of crafting compelling narratives and engaging audiences.
The workshop provided a hands-on experience, with the students putting their newly acquired knowledge into practice during a thrilling night photography session at the Bremerhaven harbour. Under the guidance of experienced professionals, they captured the beauty and drama of the city’s lightscape, learning valuable techniques for capturing impactful imagery in a variety of settings, particularly during the long dark winter in the Arctic.

The workshop was a valuable experience for the YESSS team, equipping them with the skills and confidence to effectively communicate their research to a broader audience. This training will help them share their findings through captivating visuals and compelling narratives, ensuring that their work resonates with the public and contributes to a greater understanding of the Arctic’s challenges and opportunities.
